The John Hunter Memorial Trail (formerly known as the Solomon Gulch Trail) starts at sea level and climbs through a beautiful coastal spruce forest where it intersects with the Trans-Alaska Pipeline service road and continues to Solomon Gulch. The trail continues up another steep hill before dropping down into Solomon Gulch. After passing several streams, bridges, and waterfalls, the trail leads to a large dam and a beautiful lake.
Section A of the Shoup Bay Trail runs from the trailhead to Gold Creek bridge. This scenic trail transverses an old growth forest and grasslands area. It offers beautiful views of the Valdez Bay and Chugach National Park, and leads hikers to Gold Creek River Bed; a perfect spot to gold pan, picnic, beachcomb, or camp. Bear boxes and campsights provided. Section B continues to Shoup Bay. To complete Section A & B of the trail, allow approximately 16 hours roundtrip.
